"Let's Not Worry About Model Numbers and Price"
Family roots, entrepreneurial spirit
Home Theater Store has been a family affair from the start. It started in Houston as Videoland AudioVideo Store in 1987. Mody had been working the sales floor for an independent retailer in town, and gained a voracious enthusiasm for the industry. "I got to know the products and develop a passion for them," he says of his time in retail sales. "Friends and relatives would ask me, 'What product would you suggest?'" He started researching products heavily.
Soon, the entrepreneurial spirit called. Mody's father was working as a civil engineer for the oil industry, which in late-80s Texas had fallen on hard times. Mihir's brother Prashant also was interested in technology. In 1987, the Modys decided as a family to open Videoland. The 1,700-square foot store sold typically popular products at the time—direct-view CRT and projection TVs and camcorders, mostly.
