LG and Infineon Introduce LG G8 ThinQ and Front-Facing Time-of-Flight Camera
Selfie lovers rejoice! LG Electronics and Infineon Technologies AG have joined forces to create the LG G8 ThinQ with front-facing time-of-flight (ToF) camera.
Infineon’s REAL3TM image sensor chip will be the power house behind the camera allowing for capabilities never before seen in a smartphone’s front facing camera. The chip will be able to capture infrared light as it is reflected off of the subject making ToF faster and more effective in ambient light than its 3D counterparts.
Its quick response speed is also useful in biometric authentication methods, like face-recognition.
Since ToF sees objects in 3D and is not affected by external light sources, virtual reality and augmented reality experiences will be further enhanced as well.
“Keeping in mind LG’s goal to provide real value to its mobile customers, our newest flagship was designed with ToF technology from inception to give users a unique and secure verification system without sacrificing camera capabilities,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president and head of Product Strategy at LG Mobile Communications Company. “The LG G8 ThinQ featuring ToF will be the optimal choice for users in search of a premium smartphone that offers unmatched camera capabilities.”
LG designed the new technology for use in premium and high-end smartphones as well as mid-end devices. The LG G8 ThinQ is set to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress at the end of the month.
