LG and Freescale to Collaborate on Intelligent Camera System for Driverless Cars
LG Electronics and Freescale announced on Wednesday that they’ve entered into a memorandum of understanding that they will work together to develop next-generation “vision-processing solutions” for automated driving systems, a critical component of the advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS (like backup cameras, for example), as well as the impending driverless vehicle market.
LG said the effort will enable the company to make the most of its extensive experience and “comprehensive R&D capacity” in camera systems, computer vision algorithms, and electronic technologies to evaluate existing ADAS technology and take it to the next level. LG also said that it will be transferring technologies from its home entertainment and mobile communications departments into the automotive components space to offer help with the project.
“We are excited by this opportunity to work with Freescale on next generation technologies such as ADAS,” Dr. Lee Woo-jong, president and CEO of the LG Vehicle Components Company, said in a statement. “As the automobile evolves from a mechanical to an electronic system, LG will be in the perfect position to contribute its experience to the exciting area of driverless cars and automated driving.”
