Here’s something that should make the home entertainment enthusiast rather excited: The leading manufacturer of video technology is partnering up with one of the best-known high-performance audio brands in the world. LG Electronics, makers of award-winning OLED TVs and other top-of-the-line video products, announced that is has formed a partnership with U.K.-based Meridian Audio that will bring “unrivaled sound technology” to consumers.
Meridian, founded more than 40 years ago, has been a pioneer in the high-performance audio industry. Since 2014, the company has been on a massive campaign, getting the word out about its Master Quality Authenticated technology. The tech has popped up in speakers, portable audio devices, and smartphones since then.
“We are thrilled to have entered into this unique partnership with LG and confident that our expertise and shared values will see us bring a great number of innovations to the market together, both now and in the future,” Meridian Audio CEO John Buchanan said in the statement.
No specific products have been announced with the launch of the partnership, but in their joint statement, LG and Meridian said they would collaborate on a “vast array of LG audio products,” including things like soundbars and wireless speakers, and it’s easy to imagine that those products will be MQA-enabled. LG has a history of producing audio products, but the company said that its partnership with Meridian will rely on the latter’s audio research and development history to “introduce a new level of acoustic performance” to its products.
“This partnership with Meridian is an example of LG’s commitment to creating premium audio systems that can rival the best in the business,” Seo Young-jae, head of Convergence Audio and Video products at LG Home Entertainment Company, said in the statement. “This partnership is all about delivering an outstanding entertainment experience for LG customers worldwide.”
Another Audio Partnership
For LG, a partnership with a leading audio brand is nothing new these days.
In 2016, the company announced it had reached an agreement with Bang&Olufsen to work together. News out of the partnership went quiet for a while, but the two made waves at IFA 2017 in September when they announced their first co-developed product, the BeoVision TV—a $10,000 4K OLED set with an integrated 450-watt soundbar.
The moves by LG to dive deeper into the high-performance audio space are fun to watch. The company hit a home run with its OLED technology, which has been recognized at the annual TV Shootout held at our CE Week event—including a sweep of all categories this past summer. Needless to say, they have the video technology down.
Now, though, they’ve turned their attention to producing best-in-class sound, whether that’s through technology integrated into the actual product like the B&O TV, or possible external solutions like what we might see with this Meridian partnership. It’s a smart move by LG to up its game in the audio arena, and we certainly look forward to seeing the continued results of these partnerships.
