LG Presents Wide Array of OLED 4K UHD, UHD Series at CES
LG Electronics, exhibiting at the 2015 International CES, is greatly expanding its breadth and depth of OLED 4K Ultra HD and Ultra HD models in 2015. Eleven OLED models in eight series in both flat or curved versions ranging from 55 to 77 inches (with the 77-inch model a flexible screen that can be set to be either flat or curved), and 29 models of 4K Ultra HD TVs – nearly double the number offered in 2014 and ranging in screen size from 40 to 105 inches – will populate the 2015 LG lineup, said Tim Alessi, LG’s director of new product development. “Sixty percent of our total TV line in 2015 will be 4K,” he said at a pre-CES press conference outlining LG introductions.
Feature and technology enhancements appear at different price-points within the lines. Most notable is quantum dot technology, which provides a wider color palette for a 30 percent expansion of the color gamut and improved color saturation. Each nano-sized dot is said to improve the color reproduction capabilities of LG’s 4K Ultra HD IPS displays, and quantum dot technology also makes the sets environmentally friendly as they contain no cadmium or other heavy metals.
LG’s sets are also benefiting from refinements to the webOS platform, which further simplifies connection, content discovery and source-switching. WebOS 2.0, as the new version is called, also features QuickStart+, which cuts the boot-up time for the TV by up to 60 percent. A “My Channels” app lets viewers customize up to eight favorite live or set-top channels and archive them on the webOS launcher bar.
