LG Electronics is introducing at CES 2020 an expanded soundbar lineup that leverages the company’s partnership with Meridian Audio and features premium-quality sound reproduction, easy connectivity, smart functionality and design elements that the company says integrate with the minimalist aesthetic of LG’s TVs.
Meridian technologies found in the 2020 range include Bass and Space, which boost low-frequency reproduction and widen the soundstage, and Image Elevation, which ensures a more lifelike listening experience by elevating the perceived height of lead instruments and vocals. The Image Elevation feature dovetails with the fact that the majority of the 2020 lineup supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
A new feature that is part of the specifications list for LG premium soundbars is AI Room Calibration, which optimizes sound through automatic self-calibration, which tailors audio output to the specific characteristics of the room. These models are able to recognize and analyze tones to assess the dimensions of a given space and they adjust settings accordingly, says LG. This feature is particularly effective, says LG, when the soundbars are playing content mastered with Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, producing surround sound with audio that appears to originate from multiple directions. The soundbars’ advanced processing algorithm is also able to upscale conventional file formats to near-studio quality, says the company.
Additional features include 4K Pass-Through, and enhanced, cinema-like audio is achievable with the addition of the optional SPK8 Wireless Rear Speaker Kit, compatible with most new LG soundbar models.
With Google Assistant built into more models for 2020, users can control compatible smart home devices from their LG soundbar with voice commands.
Among LG’s new soundbar entries are premium models SN9YG and SN11RG, as well as the flagship model SN11RG – a 7.1.4-channel system that comes with two wireless rear speakers that deliver forward- and up-firing sound for 360 degrees of sound immersion.
Connectivity has also been made easier, with the addition of enhanced audio return channel (eARC), so owners can plug external devices directly into their eARC-compatible TVs and hear the three-dimensional sound of high-resolution audio formats such as Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio (for models SN11RG, SN10YG, SN9YG, and SN8YG).
