Logitech and Skype Unite to Deliver “High Quality Video” Calling
Logitech and Skype announced a colaboration Tuesday to deliver “High Quality Video” online calling services. Video calls will be available with VGA resolution at 30 frames per second. Skype’s “Standard” service offers QVGA resolution (a quarter of the resolution of VGA) at 15 frames per second.
The software required to operate this package includes the new Skype 3.6 for Windows and Logitech’s QuickCam version 11.5, both available as free downloads from the respective company’s Web sites (Skype 3.6 will be available in November). The system also requires a broadband connection and a dual-core PC.
On the hardware end, High Quality Video requires one of the following Logitech webcam offerings: The Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000, Pro for Notebooks or Orbit AF. These devices each feature an autofocus that can handle proximity as close as 4 inches from the included Carl Zeiss lens. The orbit AF has the added feature of moving 190 horizontal degrees and 100 vertical degrees and includes a pan-and-tilt tracking technology.
