Tuning Into Retail
Kenwood's Bergman has seen an uncanny event in the industry. "There has been a lot of interest from broadcasters—who have converted to HD Radio— in helping to get the word out that retailers are selling the radios that are compatible with the broadcasts." He notes the case of WFUV-FM, a New York City public radio station, which has been promoting HD Radio and Kenwood, as well as retailers. On the station's Web site, a prominently displayed section on HD Radio links Web-surfers to Crutchfield, the consumer electronics catalog retailer. On-air announcements are broadcast, as well.
"The big promotions right now have to do with the broadcasters talking about the retailers, and the retailers supporting the broadcasters by having product available. That's a very rare partnership," Bergman says, explaining that in many cases money is not changing hands, rather there is a mutual agreement to promote the technology.
