Lutron Founder Joel Spira, Inventor of Dimmer, Dies at 88
Lutron Electronics founder Joel Spira died Wednesday at the age of 88.
According to an obituary published in the Allentown Morning Call, Spira died of natural causes at his home in Bucks County, Pa.
Spira founded Lutron Electronics Company in 1961 in New York City, two years after he is generally credited with inventing the solid state dimmer. Over the next five decades he built Lutron into a significant company with over 15,000 products.
