Magic Comes to Trenton Grade School
By Joe Paone
TRENTON, N.J., 5/1/03 — Basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson visited Trenton, N.J.'s L. M. Rivera School on May 1, serving as coach and mentor for the day. The special event was the grand prize in a national "One-on-One With Magic" promotion co-sponsored by Best Buy and Samsung's Four Seasons of Hope charity for children. The promotion raised $140,000 for the Magic Johnson Foundation, which assists community-based organizations with HIV/AIDS prevention and education initiatives.
Johnson, who lives with HIV, won several NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s before embarking on a successful career in inner-city business development. Addressing the school at a special assembly, he discussed the importance of performance, education and technology. Samsung's Four Seasons of Hope works year-round with sports legends Johnson, Arnold Palmer, Joe Torre and Boomer Esiason to raise money for children and families in need.
