To that end, Tweten explained, "We do custom subwoofer boxes. We have a wood shop where we do custom applications, like wood boxes to fit into a car like factory-made." The car installation departments also handle mobile video, with screens built into headrests. "We're not just a deck and two house," he said. "We want to be a full-service store." He's making stronger inroads to reach a younger demographic by highlighting these mobile communications more now than ever before.
"We constantly update the stores so they look good and clean," he said. "The difference between small boutiques and small mom-and-pop shops is that we have Best Buy resources." Using those resources, Tweten expands presentation and the chain's market niche—at times, unconventionally. Or so it might seem.
Sure, location is important, but for Tweten, it measures competition. "We actually do better when we're closer to our competition," he said. The store's latest opening in Santa Rosa is right across the street from a Best Buy. Whereas some retailers may avoid this setup, Tweten courts it. "We like that combination," he admitted. "When we go into inferior locations, we don't do as well. If there's not enough people to support it, we don't build."
