"Everybody loves home theater," he said. "That's what drives our business. An average size project would be a dedicated home theater system in the $50,000 to $75,000 range. Generally, other customs can range anywhere from $75,000 to half a million." He explained that though designers work within a much smaller region in Washington than existing branch stores, they can estimate jobs right through to install.
"If a customer walks into a retail store and wants custom installation, they can be taken care of on the floor," he explained. Miller said that there are certain parameters in place when it comes to more complicated requests, however. A designer intervenes in the planning stage if the installation involves a plasma TV; a two-piece projection system; or extends beyond two rooms.
The custom install division was revamped to account for new technology and customer demands. It used to be that Magnolia wasn't advanced enough to provide install on systems in a higher bracket, which increasingly characterized its customer base. "We had to send customers to our competition," he complained. Design has since made two new inroads.
