The recession also prompted Crutchfield's first privately sourced product line, the Sound Ordnance entry-level subs, enclosures, amplifiers and speakers, which debuted in February. Under an initiative spearheaded by Fay, Crutchfield developed and sourced its own entry-level 12v line.
The line has seen some shortages, because of Crutchfield's conservative ordering and reordering practices, but it has "performed better than the products it replaced," Souder said. Crutchfield's goal with Sound Ordnance is not to cannibalize sales of its Kenwood, Alpine and Pioneer lines but "to supplement those products with entry-level products that are great for some customers." So far, Crutchfield has no plans for more privately sourced lines beyond Sound Ordnance. DS
