Mastering the Digital Media Control Center
The savviest early adopters will know about media centers, and will want to install them. But those consumers will be largely unaware of the battle for control now taking place behind the boxes. Retailers will be hard-pressed to explain the vague but nettlesome factors that affect the growth of the media center business. And if the media center business does fall into the hands of the communications and copyright powerhouses, front-line retailers may suffer an array of consequences — starting with sales lost to other entities.
Right now, the best dealers can do is to be aware that these products are in the pipeline, and that they are controversial, to say the least. The debate gives a complex new meaning to the term "control freak."
