Microsoft “Could Consider” Blu-ray on Xbox
In the latest sign that the hi-def DVD format war is nearing a conclusion, a Microsoft executive said for the first time at CES that the company would “consider” one day adding Blu-ray support to versions of the Xbox 360.
According to Reuters, Albert Penello, the group marketing manager for the Xbox brand, said that Xbox support for Blu-ray is “something we’ll have to consider,” in the event that the HD DVD format were to fail.
Microsoft has backed HD DVD from the start, even contributing to the technology, and offers an HD DVD add-on to the Xbox 360 now. To add Blu-ray support would be a significant admission of defeat, although it remains to be seen whether Sony, the company behind both Blu-ray and Xbox rival the PlayStation 3, would license its technology to a gaming rival.
