Closing a deal announced in May, Microsoft has acquired digital marketing company aQuantive for $6 billion. Kevin Johnson, president of Microsoft Corp.’s platforms and services division, told the AP, “Our goal is to be No. 1 or No. 2,” in reference to the acquisition’s positioning Microsoft to take on Google’s online advertising business. As more desktop applications become web-based, Microsoft hopes to capitalize on the increased need for web-based advertising platforms. Johnson plans to form an online advertising and publishing solutions group with aQuantive Chief Executive Brian McAndrews to serve this market.
