Microsoft Comes 360 In Console War
Who’s the king of the U.S. video game console wars? In December 2006, it was Microsoft and its Xbox 360, by far the oldest of the three next generation consoles. Released in November 2005, the 360 sold 1.1 million units in December alone, compared with 604,200 units of the Nintendo Wii and 490,700 units of the Sony PlayStation 3, according to retail market research firm NPD.
The December numbers brings the total sales of the Xbox 360 to 4.5 million in the U.S. and 10.4 million worldwide.
Overall video game and hardware sales were $3.7 billion in December, up 28 percent, according to NPD, while overall sales rose 19 percent in 2006 to $12.5 billion.
