Microsoft Confirms Blu-ray Support
After weeks of rumors, Microsoft confirmed earlier this week that it will indeed support the Blu-ray Disc format. According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the software giant’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, confirmed the switch in a speech at last week’s Mix ‘08 event in Seattle.
Ballmer said that the support will initially involve “device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like,” with more to come; he also pledged to support Blu-ray “in ways that make sense.”
Microsoft was an initial backer of HD DVD, and included an HD DVD add-on to its Xbox 360 gaming console. The company has been rumored to be considering Blu-ray support on the 360, but such a move has not been confirmed.
