Meijer to Test Smaller Stores
Midwestern retailer Meijer has announced plans to test a smaller store format in a store in suburban Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.
The chain will open a 102,000-square foot store, about half the size of a typical Meijer store, in Niles, Ill., early next year, the paper said. It will be the smallest of the chain's 189 stores. Analysts quoted by the paper see the move as part of the "small-store movement" that has been embraced by Best Buy, Walmart and various other retail chains, as part of the down economy.
