What if they gave a format war and nobody cared?
While passions ran high at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas over which HDTV broadcast format was better--720 progressive, the pick of ABC and Fox, or 1080 interlaced, the choice of NBC and CBS--one bottom line was ignored: most consumers will never notice the difference, or frankly, care.
Whatever is broadcast will be displayed on the first generation of HD sets. Period. Will there be a variation of picture quality? Yes. But that variation may be determined as much by how the programming is produced as by which format is broadcast.
