On Friday, Bloomberg reported that sources within Apple have confirmed a new model of the Apple Watch will be released this year that will be capable of connecting directly to cellular networks. That means consumers who strap one of these new models to their wrists won’t need their iPhone to be able to take calls, text, get notifications, and more. Apple is freeing us from our iPhones.
In it’s current form, the Apple Watch requires either a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection to the user’s iPhone in order to fully function. By incorporating an LTE chip into the new model, which is expected to launch by the end of the year, users will be able to leave their iPhone behind while not missing out on important calls, messages, notifications, and more.
According to Bloomberg, Intel will supple the LTE modems for the new Apple Watch.
