Nationwide COVID-19 Webinar Dives Deep into Law’s Implications
The House of Representatives’ Families First Coronavirus Response Act (H.R. 6201), which just became law, was the subject of an informational webinar, “An Employer’s Guide to COVID-19,” that the Nationwide Marketing Group independent dealer organization mounted Wednesday evening, March 25, featuring employment attorneys Timothy A. Davis and Jill S. Strickland, who helped Group members understand the law’s provisions and its potential implications and benefits.
The webinar provided the buying group members with insights into an array of areas covered in H.R. 6201, touching on tax credits, sick leave wages and unemployment provisions, to name a few topics.
Davis characterized the battle against COVID-19 virus as “a long-term fight.
"Your game plan is adapt and survive,” he told attendees.
He acknowledged a scenario at the retail level that begs business owners to learn the law’s provisions and to be able to effectively convey them to workers. “Your employees are terrified – afraid to get sick and afraid not to come to work,” he said. “Communicating with them is absolutely critical.”
After a thorough, PowerPoint-enhanced illumination of the law’s provisions, the lawyers fielded questions submitted online by members.
Questions posed after the presentation were wide-ranging in topic. They included queries about how the law would affect pay for workers who are out sick but who are paid on a commission basis. Dealers tuning in also wanted to know about how an employer would be expected to handle a furloughed employee’s share of health premium payments. Another question touched on the limitations on the number of separate leaves employees could take. And yet another asked how to address the concerns of employees who are not infected but, fearful of infection, would be requesting time off.
Mike Whitaker, who heads up the Nationwide Learning Academy and who funneled the dealer-submitted questions to the lawyers, told attendees that there is a printable Department of Labor poster available that clarifies most of the salient points of the law for employees, and that it was likely, given the fluidity of the situation, that additional Nationwide webinars would be presented in future for members as the situation progresses.
