Nationwide Members Look to Tune In and Clean Up this Holiday Season
Nationwide, the country’s largest buying group representing over 7,000 independent storefronts, is holding its semi-annual “PrimeTime!” meeting in Las Vegas this week to talk sales strategy and make deals that will move appliances, furniture and consumer electronics products this holiday season. “We expect the next six months of sales to be phenomenal,” says Nationwide Executive Vice President Robert Weisner. “It’s all about color TV and front-loading washers.”
Weisner says many independent dealers, even those mom and pop shops on Main Street that do most of their business in appliances, are taking advantage of the demand for flatpanels, especially as football season approaches. “A guy used to be able to go out and buy a 30-inch for $399...but now he’s buying a 40-inch LCD for over a thousand. So, a lot of our folks are getting back into the TV business,” says Weisner.
Jim and Sue Owen, third-generation owners of Owen Furniture Company in Livingston, Texas, were on the “PrimeTime!” showfloor Monday checking out the flatpanels in the Philips booth. “A lot of our customers are still saying, ‘I’m not going to change a TV that’s working just fine!’” says Jim Owen, “But I think that will change soon, as satellite and cable companies offer more HD programming, especially sports.”
