Netflix and LG Join Forces to Stream Online Video to Set-Top Boxes
Netflix, Inc. and LG Electronics announced a partnership today to develop a set-top box capable of streaming online video to television sets, bypassing PCs. A networked player, expected from LG in the second half of 2008, will deliver the content.
Netflix currently offers DVDs by mail and online video-on-demand sent to a user’s PC. The company’s current online film and TV selection spans over 6,000 titles and counting, as compared to a DVD selection of 90,000 titles.
Netflix Founder, Chairman and CEO Reed Hastings spoke of the company’s initial intent to develop their own box before concluding “that familiar consumer electronics devices from industry leaders like LG Electronics are a better consumer solution for getting the Internet to the TV.”
