Netflix, Roku Launch Set-Top Box
Netflix on Tuesday announced that it has teamed up with a Silicon Valley-based company called Roku on a new set-top box that will allow subscribers to instantly stream movies directly from their queue to their TV. The company’s product, which is called The Netflix Player by Roku, will retail for $99.99.
It is unclear what the device’s release means for the collaboration between Netflix and LG on another set-top device, which was announced earlier this year. Netflix had also recently said that it was planning additional partnerships in the CE sector, including with three companies that would make set-top boxes. “The key breakthroughs of The Netflix Player by Roku are simplicity and cost,” Netflix’s CEO, Reed Hastings, said as part of the announcement. “First, it allows consumers to use the full power of the Netflix Web site to choose movies for their instant Queue. Second, there are no extra charges and no viewing restrictions.”
