Netflix Runs Out of Set-Top Boxes
Less than two weeks after introducing a new set-top box, called The Netflix Player by Roku, the company has sold out of the product, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings told the San Jose Mercury News. Hastings added that his company is pushing Roku, the supplier, to “boost production” of the devices.
A Roku executive told the paper that it is facing a backlog of six to eight weeks.
The company both announced and launched the product in May, to allow customers to download their Netflix movies directly, as opposed to using the mail. Netflix has said that the Roku partnership is just one of many similar moves into the set-top market; the company has already announced a partnership with LG and more are expected by year’s end.
