NETGEAR Aims to Bring WiFi Outdoors with Weather-Resistant Orbi Add-On
Networking product provider NETGEAR recently announced a new way for consumers to take their in-home WiFi experience outdoors. The company expanded its line of Orbi networking products to now include the Orbi Outdoor Satellite—a weather-resistant product that links up with the company’s Orbi Pro Sri-Band WiFi System to extend the user’s mesh WiFi network outdoors. The Orbi Outdoor Satellite was a CES 2018 Innovation Awards honoree.
According to NETGEAR the Outdoor Satellite is capable of extending the user’s high-performance WiFi coverage up to an additional 2,500 feet, and enables connected individuals to enjoy “uninterrupted 4K HD videos” to be streamed in the backyard.
The Orbi Outdoor Satellite brings with it the capabilities of the Orbi Whole Home WiFi System, which includes the single network name for seamless roaming, a dedicated third channel for data exchange between the router and satellite, and a separate Guest WiFi network. The outdoor satellite can also smartly adopt the characteristics of an Orbi Pro for Small Businesses when added to that network, NETGEAR explained.
“An Orbi WiFi System includes at least two components as part of the mesh network, a router and a satellite, that are pre-paired together for an easy out-of-the-box set-up,” NETGEAR explained in a statement. “Simply connect the Orbi router to your internet modem or service provider gateway, and place the Orbi satellite somewhere central to the area of intended WiFi coverage. Depending upon the Orbi System installed, the WiFi coverage area can range from 3,500 square feet up to 5,000 feet around your property.”
Adding an Orbi Outdoor Satellite to the network applies that previously-mentioned extra 2,500 square feet of coverage. NETGEAR said the setup takes minutes and can be done with the push of a button or through the Orbi App.
“Orbi Outdoor Satellite is an exciting new addition to our family of Orbi WiFi Systems. WiFi is now considered a basic home utility. When you turn the faucet tap, you expect water to flow. When you flip a switch, you expect the lights to glow. It’s the same for WiFi,” David Henry, senior vice president of Connected Home for NETGEAR, said in the statement. “You want WiFi wherever you need it, when you need it, and it shouldn’t matter whether you’re inside or outside the home. It is frustrating to go into the garage or the backyard and to have your WiFi connection drop. By adding the Orbi Outdoor Satellite to your Orbi WiFi System, you’ll enlarge your WiFi coverage to reach the farthest corners of your property.”
The device has an IP56 rating, meaning it can withstand outdoor weather conditions and sub-zero temperatures. Users will have the flexibility of either attaching the satellite to a stand or mounting it to a wall. NETGEAR said the Orbi Outdoor Satellite is available now in the U.S. through authorized NETGEAR partners, major retailers, reseller channels, and ecommerce websites at an MSRP of $329.99.
