New Music Format Coming From SanDisk
SanDisk this week announced a new music format meant to make music portable on both computers and mobile phones. The format, called slotMusic, will be available by year’s end, with Best Buy and Walmart already on board as brick-and-mortar vendors and all three major music industry conglomerates involved as well.
The disk format will work simply by plugging into existing mobile phones and mp3 players, as well as PCs.
“slotMusic offers consumers an immediate, tangible, and high quality alternative to CDs and digital delivery,” Danielle Levitas, vice president for consumer, broadband and new media for IDC, said as part of the announcement. “This year, more than 1.2 billion mobile phones will ship globally, outstripping portable media players by nearly an order of magnitude - and this trend is accelerating.”
