New Players in Digital Displays
Foreseeing LCD as the future of television, a newly formed company, Westinghouse Digital Electronics, under the 100-year-old brand name, recently announced plans to become a supplier of LCD televisions to retail. Starting out with five SKUs—including a 27-inch model—the company is planning a wide channel strategy, targeting independent and national retailers alike.
"To be a credible player, the company must secure supply," says President Douglas Woo. In order to do this, the company has partnered with Chi Mei Optoelectonics, an LCD panel manufacturer based in Taiwan. Woo explains that association with Chi Mei gives the company the ability to maintain a reliable supply chain and quickly add SKUs as the retail demand dictates. The company is staying with LCD because its leaders feel that it is the strongest technology contender. "In our view," says Woo, "it's just a matter of time before LCD takes over the [HDTV] category."
