New Study Looks at the Future of VoIM
According to a new report by Light Reading’s VOIP Insider, Voice Over Instant Messaging (VoIM) is poised to become a significant technology, provided it can overcome the hurdles of ease-of-use and interoperability. VoIM, used to describe VoIP service with an instant messaging interface, is available from IM service providers such as AOL, Apple, EarthLink, Google, ICQ, Microsoft, Skype and Yahoo! The report, “Voice Over IM: The Next VOIP Disrupter,” analyzes the challenges these companies will face, including a lack of interoperability between service providers. The author of the report, Light Reading’s Enterprise VOIP Insider Research Analyst Denise Culver, explains, “For VoIM to succeed, service providers must work together to overcome the walled gardens they have built around their services and create true interoperability within the industry. The widespread adoption of VoIM will only suffer as service providers refuse to adopt an industry operating standard for the service while they try to develop customer relationships.”
The report suggests a demand for all-in-one communications tools that combine voice, video and messaging, which VoIM may be able to provide. It also points to the business sector as a viable, largely untapped customer base.
