It has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for the digital photo frame category since we saw the first products back in the early 2000’s. Those initial offerings were a bit clunky, uploading images was cumbersome and screen resolution was iffy. Many of those early models also seemed to burn out after less than a year of heavy usage.
Well, like everything else digital, the category has evolved quite nicely ever since, as screen res is now outstanding, image upload is done wirelessly and sharing components have been added that lift the category to an entirely new level. And the category continues to grow, due in no small part to the burgeoning smart home category, as the digital photo frame has become a nice piece of that overall puzzle.
Which brings us to Nixplay, and their line-up of Smart Photo Frames and the first thing that stands out about the line is it’s look, elegant and unassuming. Gone is the bulky, techy look this category used to offer up. Nixplay frames can fit any decor style and mesh well with the surrounding interior.
Set up is as straightforward as it gets, no media cards or cables, photo upload is done instantly using the Nixplay app. Once you’ve uploaded those initial images you’ll be impressed at the frame’s full HD/Full-HD/2K resolution - crisp, clear images and you’ll notice that colors really pop. And images remain sharp no matter what angel they are viewed from - an issue with past digi-frame products.
Once you’re done taking the screen for a test drive, you can let the Nixplay really shine, as you can select photos and videos to display on the smart frame from wherever you are through the app. If you give the frame as a gift, you can log into the frame (with permission from the owner, of course) and load images you’d like to share with family and friends. And Nixplay, unlike a few other smart device makers out there, built in end-to-end encryption, so users are not at the mercy of hackers. You can also create different photo playlists of various events, so sharing is relevant and easy. The app also allows you to adjust the screen for things like brightness and vibrancy. The customization capabilities that Nixplay has added are right in line with today’s growing consumer demand for personalization.
On the frame’s front left hand side are two small black buttons, the IR sensor and a motion detector. On the back there is a bendable stand mount that slides off to reveal the wall mount. The frame also comes in multiple sizes and decor styles, so it’s a fit for a variety of tastes and locations in the home.
As we mentioned in our opening, as the demand for smart homes and smart home décor products continues to grow, the digital frame category will as well. If you don’t believe that, how about digesting this number - the global digital photo frame market is poised to grow by $47.19 million over the next three years according to Technavio.
The Nixplay line of smart digital frames starts at around $179.99.
