Accessorize: Ears Wide Open
Because of a seismic shift in the way people listen to music these days, many consumer electronics retailers are taking a long, hard look—and listen—at something they may have taken for granted in years past: headphones. Here's why: headphones are the new loudspeakers.
The recent announcement from Apple that it has made its 250 millionth iPod is sure evidence that music has gone mobile. And when coupled with last year's research that showed only one in 10 iPods is being used with an aftermarket headphone, it's clear there's a huge untapped market.
Not surprisingly, a recent CEA survey showed that headphones are the most desired purchase in the coming year for iPods. Like loudspeakers, today's headphones come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, styles and just about every conceivable price point and quality level. Like loudspeakers, headphones also offer retailers a rich and ongoing profit stream.
