It’s hard to believe that in a little over a year, North launched the first generation of Focals smart glasses, opened up two retail showrooms, and hit the road on a Pop-Up Showroom tour—all while adding new capabilities to the glasses on a weekly basis. And now, as they continue with the fast pace they set right out of the gate, North has created the next generation of the iconic smart glasses with Focals 2.0.
“The first generation of Focals marked the evolution of traditional glasses to smart glasses, with a considered design representing the first true everyday smart glasses available on the market,” said Stephen Lake, CEO and co-founder of North. “Focals 2.0 are at a completely different level, as the most advanced smart glasses ever made. They represent an enormous step forward in engineering the future. We spent the last year in the market learning how to build, sell and support smart glasses with our first generation product, that we now will combine with over five years of research working on the technology upgrades in Focals 2.0.”
Five months ago, we were able to get our hands on a pair of Focals for an Unboxed review. Our one quibble was that the sides were a bit heavy due to the complex technology running through the glasses. This time around, North minimized that technology by a whopping 40 percent—surely not an easy feat considering all that these glasses can do. The Focals, which were pretty natural-looking to begin with, are now even lighter, sleeker, and more powerful than before. Focals 2.0 will also offer a wider range of prescription support, and a sharper 10x improved retinal display.
“Focals 2.0 is such an incredible step forward and we are gearing up to bring to market at scale,” said CTO and co-founder Matthew Bailey. "Since launching Focals last fall, we have consistently updated the product experience and will continue to add new features and functionality to our first product generation as we build to our launch of 2.0.”
Additional details about Focals 2.0 were sparse, but North promised to reveal more information on them in the coming months as their 2020 launch date grows nearer. The first generation of Focals have already been placed into retirement, but showrooms will remain open for those looking to speak to an expert or receive a demo. North isn’t accepting any pre-orders for Focals 2.0 just yet, but you can sign up to receive emails when more information becomes available.
