North Restructures Focals Pricing, Launches Prescription Lenses
We’re just a few weeks into the rollout of the Focals smart glasses by North, and the company is already offering up some new details about the tech frames. In short, the company has launched the prescription lenses that it promised, and it has restructured the pricing scale for the smart glasses to one “better reflects what customers expect from eyewear.”
For the prescription lenses, Focal said it can now manufacture in-house lenses for the Focals that fit within a range of −4 to +2 SPH and 0 to − 2 CYL. The lenses are “premium quality” and are made at the company’s main manufacturing plant in Waterloo, Ontario. All lenses, prescription or otherwise, come with an inti-reflective and UV protective coatings.
For those customers looking to get the prescription lenses for their Focals, they simply upload their prescription online prior to their in-store appointment, or they can bring their prescription in to one of North’s flagship showrooms—in Brooklyn or Toronto—or one of the Pop-up Showrooms, the first of which
As for the pricing structure, when Focals were first announced, the company launched them at price of $999. This week, they slashed the starting price nearly in half to $599 ($799 Canadian), which covers a basic pair with basic frames and no prescription lenses. From there, prescription lenses can be added into the order for an extra $200, while premium lenses, alternative colors, and limited edition silhouettes will be available for an extra $100. The more-affordable entry-level pricing should make Focals a more reasonable investment for a wider segment of consumers. But the hope for North is that it will also give users some flexibility to upgrade their Focals based on personal preferences.
Going a step further in their commitment to the customer, North said that every single customer who previously bought their Focals at the original price point will receive a refund for the difference in price.
Pop-up Showroom Tour
In addition to the news around the Focals smart glasses, North announced a Pop-up Showroom tour. The company plans to hit the west coast with their first pop-up set to arrive in Seattle on February 19 at IMPark. That’ll be followed up by a space in the Bay Area—exact dates and locations will be announced in the near future.
“Our Showrooms in Brooklyn and Toronto have been a great starting place, but we’ve had a lot of demand outside of those markets. With our new Pop-up Showroom, we’ll be able to bring Focals to potential customers all across North America,” Stephen Lake, CEO and Co-founder of North, said in a statement. “We’re starting with Seattle and the Bay Area, but will be expanding beyond there soon. Stay tuned.”
Though the pop-up locations aren’t full-scale retail stores, North said that visitors will still be able to try on Focals, demo the experience, and go through the custom-sizing process in order to purchase a pair. Reservations for the pop-up experience are required and limited. More information can be found right here.
