Notebook Sales Surge in Q4
Consumer desire for all things mobile (except, of course, flat panel TVs, surround sound systems and anything else that contributes to a comfortable home entertainment experience) helped fuel a 28 percent increase (or 79 million units) in notebook sales last year, according to Display Search’s Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report.
Fourth-quarter sales last year jumped 29 percent over Q3, with HP taking the lead, shipping about 4.7 million units to capture 20 percent of the notebook market. Dell took a hit during the quarter, losing share from Q3 ’06 to Q4.
Retailers benefited from the increase. Consumer notebook sales saw a 90 percent increase in ’06 over ’05, while commercial sales rose 35 percent for the same period, according to IDC.
