Thailand Floods Impact CE Supply Chain
The holiday selling season is frustrating enough, but now CE retailers will have to deal with the price increases and shortages of hard-drives and other products following the Thailand floods.
"The biggest impact on the industry is what's going on in Thailand," Rob Eby, vice president of purchasing for D&H, said at the distributor's Mid-Atlantic Fall Technology Show this week in Hershey, Pa. "It's impacting hard-drive companies ... and that will interrupt so many businesses."
Eby, along with several dealers at the show, said hard-drive prices have shot up between 25 and 40 percent over the last few weeks. The floods, they said, will impact the supply of notebooks, digital cameras, and set-top boxes/DVRs, among other products. Western Digital, Seagate, Nikon and Sony are among some of the major vendors whose key manufacturing facilities were hit by the floods.
