Android Market Share Reaches 44 Percent

Among smartphones sold in the third quarter in the U.S., 44 percent carried the Android operating system, for the top spot and a significant increase over the previous quarter. That's according to numbers released Monday by research firm the NPD Group.
Apple was second with 23 percent, followed by Research in Motion's BlackBerry, which fell to third place with 22 percent.
In terms of handset models, according to NPD's Mobile Phone Track, Apple's iPhone 4 remains #1, following by the BlackBerry Curve 8500, the LG Cosmos, Motorola Droid X and HTC EVO 4G.
