NPD: Not Much Retail Impact From Storm
The huge snowfall last weekend may have kept customers on the East Coast at home, but it's not likely the snowstorm will have an appreciable effect on overall holiday sales. That's the opinion of NPD Group's vice president of industry analysis.
Stephen Baker, writing on NPD Group's blog, noted that while the regions affected by the storm account for 18 percent of overall sales, "it’s not likely that a one or two day pause in holiday shopping will cause measurable impact on the final holiday sales volume, even when those two days are two of the busiest days holiday shopping days, the Saturday and Sunday before Christmas."
This, Baker wrote, is because the Christmas holiday falls on a Friday, leaving several days of last-minute shopping. Also, the rise of online shopping partially offset the lost revenue from the weather.
