OLED Is On the Way, But a Long Way From Challenging LCD
Sony’s first-ever TV using ultra-flat OLED technology is set for unveiling in January, with release date and pricing information announced early in the new year. But according to experts, it may be nearly a decade before the new technology seriously competes with LCD.
According to iSuppli Group data cited by the International Herald Tribune, only about 13,000 of the OLED TVs will likely be sold worldwide next year, as compared with 99 million of market leader LCD. Meanwhile, a DisplaySearch analyst predicted that the OLED could become a threat to LCD’s dominance eventually, although he placed that event at sometime “beyond 2015.”
Sony already began selling the XEL-1 model in Japan, and will unveil it in the U.S. next year.
