Onkyo Drops HD DVD
Another post-format war domino fell Thursday when Onkyo Corp. announced that it would no longer develop or produce HD DVD players. In the short time that the company’s DV-HD805 player was on the market, Onkyo said, they sold around 2,000 units.
“Onkyo has reached its decision to discontinue the development and production of HD DVD players after thorough review of Toshiba’s public announcement [that it was dropping HD DVD].” Onkyo added that since Toshiba supplies core parts of the players, “it will be difficult for Onkyo to continue its further development and production” of the players. Onkyo did pledge to continue providing full product support and after-sales service for the players it has sold.
Perhaps hinting that it will next enter the Blu-ray market, the company also said that its R&D teams have “maintained a parallel development program” with Blu-ray, and that its home theater products are compatible with Sony’s technology.
