Ooma’s next-gen HD wireless indoor/outdoor video security camera, the app-based Smart Cam ($149.99), can distinguish wanted from unwanted persons at one’s doorstep through facial recognition. Its face tagging function, a feature that – along with two-way audio and auto arm/disarm through GPS and geofencing, is available at a nominal subscription fee of $4.99/month (the Premium subscription level), uses Artificial Intelligence built into the system and lets the owner customize settings, teaching the camera to recognize friends, family and pets and to suppress alerts for them.
Other features of the camera that are supplied with the device at the basic, subscription-free Monitor level, include: seven days of free cloud storage; 24/7 live streaming; video history recording; instant alerts when there is motion, sound or attempts to tamper with the camera; unlimited video downloading and sharing capability; and 16GB of onboard memory to store video clips, as well as an internal battery, which will run for six months before recharging is needed.
The camera, which attaches to its wall mount magnetically to make it easy to detach it for recharging, was on display at the recent NYC-held Pepcom show as part of the company’s Smart Security lineup of products. The suite of products includes sensors that detect motion, and provide intruder alerts and also alerts to open doors, windows and garages, smoke and water leakage.
