As High-Def DVD Sales Hit a Million In First Quarter, Blu-ray Jumps Ahead
Sales of high-definition DVD discs passed 1 million in the first quarter of 2007 for the first time- and in that quarter, Blu-ray outsold HD DVD by more than a 2-to-1 margin, the Hollywood Reporter reported Monday, citing statistics from Home Media Magazine’s research department.
The research also found that the momentum is going Blu-ray’s way, with the Sony-owned format taking the lead in February and moving even further ahead in March. In all, the 1.2 million discs sold in the first quarter consisted of 832,530 Blu-ray discs and 359,300 HD DVDs.
One example cited by the Reporter was 2006’s Best Picture Oscar winner, “The Departed,” which was simultaneously released in both formats on the same day, but sold 20,000 more copies on Blu-ray than on HD DVD in the ensuing six weeks.
