Panasonic Introduces Fastest High-Def Disc
Panasonic last week announced the impending introduction of a write-once Blu-ray storage disc (BD-R) that can write faster than any high-definition video disc previously introduced.
The new disc boasts a 4x writing speed, or 144 megabytes per second, about twice the speed of the fastest previous write-able high-def disc. The new disc will come in 25- and 50-GB denominations, with the former scheduled for release this month and the latter arriving in September. The model numbers for the two discs are LM-BR25LDE and LM-BR50LDE.
Panasonic says that because of new technology that reduces dust, the new discs will have only one tenth the potential for error of a conventional DVD.
