CompUSA has three BTO primary customers: the small to medium enterprise with less than 100 employees, the "pro-sumer" who buys at the front of the technology curve and likely has more than one PC at home, and corporate "large bid" customers. "This is not for the home computer market," said Howe, "and you see that when you look at our software load. There's not a lot of games, no speaker phones. These are business machines."
Regional retailers, many of whom jumped on the retail PC bandwagon about two years ago only to get burned, are also using the BTO model.
