Bill Gates announced yesterday that over the next two years, he would be transitioning out of a day-to-day role at Microsoft to spend more time on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. As of July 2008, Gates sole involvement will be as chairman of Microsoft and as a consultant on certain projects. Effective immediately, Chief Technology Officers Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie will become chief software architect (a position held by Gates since 200) and chief research and strategy officer, respectively. Gates described this move as a “hard decision,” adding, “I’m very lucky to have two passions that I feel are so important and so challenging. As I prepare for this change, I firmly believe the road ahead for Microsoft is as bright as ever.”
