Pioneer To Exit 42-Inch-and-Below Plasma Category
Pioneer will soon stop producing plasma TV panels of the 42-inch-and-below size, and will instead purchase those units from Panasonic and Hitachi. That’s according to a report by Reuters Monday, which cited earlier reporting by the Japanese newspaper Asahi.
Pioneer made the move because it has been losing money overall in the flat-panel business and is hoping for a turnaround. The move, which will entail the seizing of production at a plant in Southern Japan, is set to take place in early 2009. The company plans to sell the plant back to previous owner NEC.
The company will continue to make its own panels 50 inches and larger, the report also said.
