Challenged by the Opportunity?
Across the nation and around the world, retailers hear the voices of consumers looking for ways to personalize their portable consumer electronics experience and integrate their lifestyle in ways that just a few years ago we could have never imagined. Unless we are living in a cave somewhere, we are constantly barraged with words like podcast, iTunes, nano, gigs, bits, bytes and hard drives. The portable revolution is here and, as a savvy retailer, you must do everything you can to take advantage of this opportunity.
Technology is moving so fast, USA Today found it necessary to print a half-page dictionary for personal technology called the “Lowdown on High-tech Terms.” This was to educate consumers on terms that describe the latest in cool gadgets. No matter what we think, like or dislike, we are moving too slow as an industry to keep up with the ever-changing technology environment.
Every New Year brings new automobile models and more integration challenges to our mobile electronics. The iPod phenomenon continues, HD Radio is on the horizon and the other “pods” are looking for a place in the automobile, as well. “Convergence” is the latest buzz word describing the collision between the automobile and consumer electronics. This convergence encompasses everything. Portable products like Bluetooth devices, navigation, satellite and HD Radio are all vying for integration in the automobile. This further highlights the trend in new consumer technologies. Clearly, there are great opportunities for our industry and we must embrace portable products to stay on the cutting edge of the new technology experience.
