Portable Devices Continue to Diversify
By David Dritsas
At CES in Las Vegas this year, some powerhouse consumer electronics companies introduced Internet appliances, a category that last year was the ballywick of small start-up companies that have since lost some steam.
Intel, which has been aggressively expanding its consumer products division over the past few months, previewed two such appliances at the show. The Intel Web Pad drew much interest. It is a wireless tablet that connects wirelessly to a base station and uses whatever Internet connection is being used for the home PC, making the device ISP agnostic. The device features a color touch-screen display and several "hot key" buttons. The Web tablet will be available this year, but a price and a ship date have not yet been released.
