Clearly it's the age of the smartphone. You'd be living under one heck of a big rock if you disagreed with that.
One need only look at a cluster of people in any given place at any given time in modern society and it's a safe bet at least half of them have their portable device in front of them consuming media, communicating or using it in some way that leverages the immediate power of their pocket technology. It's sometimes overwhelming to think of the sheer volume of things that now occur on smartphones and, more recently, Internet-enabled tablets.
It's no wonder that the retail shopping experience has changed so dramatically in the past year or two. Given the number of scanner apps for smartphones and tablets that cover everything from barcodes to other unique embedded code tags, it's very easy to capture a code and let your smartphone do the rest; whatever that next step might be.
