The Week in Electronics Retail Crime
Shoplifting Ring Caught
The leader of a shoplifting ring that stole from retail stores throughout Florida and Georgia was arrested earlier this month at a Georgia Walmart. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the suspects would buy electronics items from Walmart stores and then use the receipts to steal identical items. The ring's leader was arrested along with two female accomplices; the leader was charged with theft by shoplifting, theft by receiving stolen property, intent to cheat or defraud a retailer and battery, as well as a separate charge of failing to register as a sex offender.
Walmart Empty Box Arrest
A trio of Mexican nationals were arrested in Phoenix this month and charged with participating in a stolen credit card scam. According to the Associated Press, the three men bought a laptop computer and then returned its empty box, claiming it had been sold to them that way. When police arrived to arrest them one of the men ran away and subsequently threw several credit cards to the ground.
While the men had indeed used the stolen cards, it later turned out the store had in fact sold them an empty box.
